Towing with a lifted Super Duty

A lift raises the hitch, not your ratings.

Keep the trailer level

CURT explains that a lift raises the receiver, so a drop hitch brings the coupler back to level. Measure the receiver height and the coupler height with the trailer level and loaded, and choose the drop from the difference.

Ratings don't go up

RV.com's diesel tech column and RealTruck both say suspension changes don't raise the factory tow or payload ratings. The door-jamb and owner's manual ratings still apply, and the drop hitch has its own rating; use the lowest.

Checks

  • Tire load range at least what the truck and load need (see tires).
  • Headlight aim and trailer brake gain after a height change.
  • Leaning on taller springs or reduced sway control: tow conservatively.
