Super Duty steering and death wobble basics

Violent front-end shake after a bump. It has known causes, and a new damper alone is rarely the whole fix.

What Ford published

  • TSB 19-2274 (filed with NHTSA): some 2017-2019 F-250/F-350 4WD trucks may show sustained steering wheel oscillation after rough pavement or expansion joints above 45 mph. The fix is a new steering linkage damper, after setting tire pressure.
  • SSM 49740: covers 2017-2021 4WD trucks with intermittent oscillation. It replaces the damper and points to the workshop manual symptom chart if the problem returns.
  • Customer Satisfaction Program 20N04: a one-time damper replacement on certain 2017-2019 F-250/F-350 4x4 and F-450/F-550 trucks. Check whether your VIN is covered and whether the program is still open.

Common causes

An aftermarket bulletin on lifted 2005-2016 trucks lists caster, worn shocks, loose or worn tie rods, ball joints and track bar, pitman arm nut torque, and tire pressure. Drivingline and MotorTrend list similar causes for solid-axle trucks in general.

Inspect in this order

  1. Tire pressure and tire balance.
  2. Track bar ends and mounts.
  3. Tie rod and drag link ends.
  4. Ball joints and wheel bearings.
  5. Steering gear mounting and pitman arm.
  6. Alignment, especially caster after a lift.

Questions

Will a new steering damper fix Super Duty death wobble?

Ford's bulletins replace the damper on some 2017-and-later trucks, but worn or loose parts, caster and tire pressure are common causes too. Inspect everything.
